Tim Martin

Timothy Martin, age 66, of Scant City passed away December 31, 2024 at his residence after a long illness. Tim was born April 13, 1958 in Marshall County, the son of George Leonard Martin and Joyce Lynn Dodd Martin.  He was a graduate of Arab High School Class of '76 and served his country with honor and courage in the US Navy for two  years.  He was retired as owner of Martin's Painting.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching Alabama football and spending time with family and friends who visited him, or he visited, with his sociable personality.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years:  Anita Martin; a son Shane Martin; son and daughter-in-law  Darell and Lisa Kirby; three grandchildren Kylie, Katie and Isaiah; two sisters Rebecca LaRue, Carole Packard; a brother and sister-in-law Rodney and Ginny Martin; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend and neighbor Connie Ericcson. 

Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Gober Funeral Chapel.

Douglas Robert Frank

 January 16, 1958 - May 26, 2024

Doug Frank was born on January 16, 1958 in Decatur to William D. and Marilyn Nelson Frank.  He was a 1976 graduate of Arab High School, then entered the United States Army, in which he served as a medevac helicopter pilot.  He retired as a warrant officer.  He is survived by his sons Douglas Christopher Frank, Nicholas Alexander Frank and Ryan Stephen Frank; sister Jacqueline Tucker; and brother  Bradley William Frank.   A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Doug loved being a member of the Arab High School band where he played baritone.  Like so many, he held Mr. Washam in the highest esteem.  Doug was a decorated Army helicopter pilot who served in Desert Storm.  Following his military career he was an EMS helicopter pilot until his health grounded him in 2016. He enjoyed flying helicopters, riding motorcycles, and collecting guitars and guns.  He made a mean quiche.  He spent most of his adult life in El Paso, Texas.  He moved to Florida in 2016.  His health had been significantly declining since 2020.  His cause of death was cardiac arrest, a complication of COPD.

Frankie Hanson

Frankie Ray Hanson age 65, of Arab passed away Monday Aug. 28, 2023, at Huntsville Hospital. Frankie was born on May 12, 1958, in Arab, AL the son of Frank Ray and Lucille Copeland Hanson. He graduated from Arab High School in 1976 and was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He retired after a career with TVA as a Nuclear Health Physicist. Frankie loved animals and rescued many through the years. He cherished his beloved dogs. Frankie was preceded in death by his parents: Frank Ray and Lucille Hanson and brother: Tim Hanson.

He is survived by close friends: Jeremy Smith and Keith Baker; cousin: Lane Cox and a host of other friends and relatives. Funeral service will be Friday Sept. 1, 2023, at 2 PM at Gober Funeral Chapel with burial in Brookwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until service time at 2 PM.

Brian Traylor

 

Wendell “Brian” Traylor, 63, of Arab died Tuesday, May 31st, 2022, at his home after a short battle with cancer.

Brian was born August 13th, 1958, in Guntersville, AL., to Wayne and Louise Traylor. He was married to Deeanna Bodine Traylor and was a lifetime resident of Arab. He was a 1976 graduate of Arab High School.
Brian was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather, and a true friend to countless people.
He was a long-time employee of Cook’s Pest Control – undoubtedly servicing a large number in the community over his 28 years with the company.
Brian’s passion was fishing, and he particularly loved Guntersville Lake. Nothing made him happier or got him more excited than catching a large bass. He was also an avid Alabama football fan and some of his happiest moments were watching big games with his family. He was a talented home builder and had just completed construction on a home for he and his wife.
He is survived by his wife: Deeanna Bodine Traylor; son: Alex Traylor (Mattie); daughter: Sara Lynn Dunn (Tre); step-daughter: Stephanie Springfield (Erik); sister: Caren Traylor Murphree (Bobby); brother: Kenneth Traylor (Pam); grandchildren: Annah Dunn, Sawyer Springfield, and Ellie Reese Springfield; niece: Michelle Murphree Adams (Michael); and nephew Bradley Murphree (Leah); and a host of great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Louise Traylor.
Visitation and a celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, June 11th, 2022 from 9AM-11AM. At Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel . The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shepherd's Cove Hospice.

Veronica Otwell Alexander

 

Veronica “Roni” Otwell Alexander of Arab passed away Monday April 4, 2022 at the age of 64 at Shepherds Cove Hospice.

Veronica was born to Nudy Otwell and Margaret Ridgeway Otwell on December 14, 1957 in Marshall County. She graduated from Arab High School in 1976.

Veronica was known as Roni to her friends and family. She was such a kind and gentle soul with a quick and beautiful smile and she laughed so easily. It did not take much to make her happy. She loved spending time with her family and creating craft items. She was very talented in making and creating most anything be it with beads, material or etc. She could look at any item, go home and make it and made it seem so easy to others. The last few months she made beautiful faux cactus gardens.

She worked at KFC in Arab for many years and loved it because of all the people she saw daily. The last few years she worked in the toy department at Walmart and she said that was her favorite job. She saw the newest toys as they came in and she interacted with the children when they were looking at the toys and made recommendations to people looking to buy a gift. She witnessed the joy on the children’s faces when they knew they would get a new toy. When the toys were taken out of the boxes and scattered around, she was the one happily putting them back together.

Roni is survived by her brother; Nathan Otwell and his wife Melissa; uncle; William Ridgeway (Paula); aunts; Gay Nell Thomas and Peggy Rodgers (Grant) all of Arab, and Geraldine Clark of Lacey Spring, and many nephews and nieces.
Roni was preceded in death by her husband; Rickey Alexander; father Nudy Otwell; mother Margaret Ridgeway Clark; sisters Sharon Willingham and Shelia “Lu” Prentice; grandparents Esca and Violet Pendergrass Ridgeway and Wallace and Ann Otwell.

Janet Wilkinson Jordan

Janet Wilkinson Jordan, age 63 passed away Monday September 27, 2021 at Crestwood Medical Center. She was born October 16, 1957. The daughter of William E. (Bud) Wilkinson and Margaret Reese Wilkinson. She was a graduate of Arab High School, Snead State Community College and Athens State College while earning a Masters Degree in Education. She taught high school English and Theatre at Arab High School and Susan Moore High School in Blount County. She was an Adjunct Professor for Snead State Community College and Wallace State Community College. Teaching was her passion along with singing. She received a scholarship from Snead State Community College as part of the College Street Singers and had the honor of singing with the College Street Singers at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She sang in the choir at First Baptist Church of Arab and the First United Methodist Church in Arab where she was a member of the church. She enjoyed theatre and was a performer and director for the Whole Backstage Theatre in Guntersville, AL. She performed as “Betty Blake” in the musical Will Rogers Follies, as “M’Lynn” in Steele Magnolias and directed the production of the musical Meet Me in St. Louis.

She is survived by her husband Terry Jordan of Arab, Al. and daughters Leanne Jordan Boyle of St. Augustine, Fl. And Rachel (Philip) Buck of Calera, AL., Parents William E “Bud” Wilkinson Jr. and Margaret Reese Wilkinson of Arab, AL. Brothers William E “Buddy” (Sandy) Wilkinson III of Somerville, Al. David Wilkinson of Guntersville AL, sister Amy (Ken) Benoski of Hoover, AL, and 7 grandchildren. 

A Celebration of Life Service was held at Arab First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 9 2021.

Gail Brown Kretzschmar

Visitation for Gail B. Kretzxchmar, 63, of Arab will be 1:00 until 3:00 on Monday, July  19th at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral will follow at 3:00 with Reverend Greg Stone officiating.  Burial will be at the Garden City Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Randall A. Kretzschmar; son Dustin A. Kretzschmar; daughter Kelley L. Melody Holman Powell

Melody Ann Powell of Arab passed away Friday, November 20, 2020, at Marshall Medical Center North. Melody was born November 19, 1957 in Tuscaloosa, the daughter of L. C. Holman and Betty Ross Shackleford Holman. She was an employee of Jones and Cameron Law Firm in Guntersville. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and, when she was able, shopping was at the top of her list. She had a love for animals, especially dogs.

She is survived by Son: Steve Powell (Jessica Lanhan); Three Grandchildren: Meril Powell-Lanhan, Moxii Powell-Lanhan and Midna Powell-Lanhan. Host of many dear friends.

Graveside Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at Brookwood Cemetery with Reverend Deborah Moon officiating. Gober Funeral Chapel directing.

Thomas Paul Gibson

Tommy Paul Gibson's Savior called him home on July 25, 2020 at the age of 62. Tommy fought a tough battle with Stage 4 lung cancer.  Through it all, his devoted wife Melanie was by his side, with encouragement and love.  

Tommy was a farmer and loved his cattle, horses and dogs. He always had a dog for a pet.  In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, skiing and motorcycling.  Tommy's life was the epitome of the great American dream, where anyone who is willing to work hard will achieve great success. He and Melanie had recently bought a spacious, fabulous home in Boaz in addition to their many acres of land. I had the privilege of spending time with him during his last days on Earth. He still had his sense of humor and it was clear that he loved Melanie dearly.

He is survived by wife Melanie Lowery Gibson, Mother Georgia Lewis Gibson, Sister Paula Parker (Carlton), Sister in law Mitzi Tarvin, Father in law Frank Lowery (Annette), Nieces and Nephews Jimmy, Christy, Alan, Amanda, Clayton, Paul, Tonia, and Jeremiah, and a host of friends.

Lonnie Wyatt

Mr. Lonnie Eugene Wyatt, age 61, of Arab, Alabama, passed away at his favorite time of day, sunrise, on Sunday, May 10th. After a tough two yearlong battle against pancreatic cancer, he peacefully entered an eternal world full of beautiful scenic roads made for motorcycle riding. Lonnie was well known and loved by many throughout the community.

He spent most of his life working in the automotive and motorcycle industries throughout the Tennessee Valley, including the opening store manager of the AutoZone in Arab. Lonnie was an avid motorcycle rider and enthusiast. He always felt so blessed being able to tour the country on two wheels alongside his family, friends, GWRRA, CMA, and other motorcycle groups. Lonnie was involved in many charitable organizations and was always the first to volunteer for fundraisers and events. He never met a stranger and loved everyone. He was so full of life, love, and wisdom and was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Survived by his wife Patty, son Winston, sister Sherry Roe, Brother-in-law Alton Roe of Gadsden, AL. Niece Holly Williams, Husband Jay Williams, children Becca, Ethan, & Zane Stone of Gadsden, AL. Nephew Tyler Roe and his wife Megan Roe and daughter Denver Roe of Hokes Bluff, AL

Mr. Wyatt is preceded in death by; parents, Omer C. and Mary Lee Wyatt of Arab, Alabama.

Daniel Wayne McNeal, 61 of Arab died Sunday, September 1, 2019 in the V. A. Medical Center, Birmingham.

Danny was born April 13, 1958, the son of Glenn O. Jr. and Cherie A. Horner McNeal. He was an Eagle Scout, Troop 60 and a graduate of Arab High School, Class of 1976, lettering twice in football for Arab High and was voted All-County Defense. After graduation he served in the United States Navy with Honor and Courage aboard the Nuclear Attack Submarine the USS Aspro. He was also a Professional Commercial Carpenter. His hobbies included golf, playing guitar, an avid lifelong reader and a Alabama Football and NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his parents: Glenn and Cherie McNeal of Arab; three brothers and their family: Michael and his wife, Jane and nephew, Michael, Jr.; Steve and his wife Laura, niece, Raegan and nephews, Logan and Jacob; Tom and his wife, Kerrie, nieces, Caroline, Olivia and Katherine; niece: Amanda (McNeal) Cole and husband, Jesse and great niece, Kaitlin; niece: Tammy (McNeal) Willis and husband, Greg and great niece, Josie and great nephew, Sam; he is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends.

Harold Daniels

Harold Daniels was born July 5, 1958. After high school he co-oped his way through college.  He worked at GTE Automatic Electric while attending Snead State Collage and worked at a TV station while attending Auburn University.  Harold graduated from Auburn with a Bachelors Degree in Operations Management. After college he worked as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts.  Later, he worked at WSWS-TV66 as Personnel Director.

Harold Daniels passed away February 14, 2018 from complications of kidney failure.The funeral was at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel with Brother Greg Stone officiating. Harold was buried at Creek Baptist Church in Campbell, Alabama.

Renotta Frachiseur

Renotta Frachiseur, 58, of Union Grove, the Union Chapel Community, died Monday February 6, 2017 at her residence.
Renotta was born August 31, 1958 in Marshall County to Billy Ray Atchley and Shirley Gail Cowan Atchley. She was a 1976 graduate of Arab High School and worked for the City of Arab as an administrative assistant with the Arab Recreation Department. Renotta loved spending time with her family and her grandkids and being involved in all their many activities, she loved going to the beach and the mountains.
Renotta is survived by her husband of 37 years: Denny Frachiseur; her son and daughter-in-law: Dustin Ray and Andrea Frachiseur; her daughter and son-in-law: Aundria and Michael Walley;her mother: Gail Atchley; her grandchildren: Hayden Frachiseur, Holt Frachiseur, Noah Walley, Madilyn Walley, Austin Walley and Reid Walley; and a brother: Andy Ray Atchley. She was preceded in death by her father: Billy Ray Atchley.

Sam Reed

December 14, 1957  - July 6, 2016

Clifford Samuel Reed, 58, of Vestavia, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 6, 2016, at his home with his family at his side after a brave two-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Sam was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford S. Reed, Sr. and Helen Johnson Reed. He is survived by his wife, Susan Reed; son, Josh Reed; daughter, Haley Brooks (Jermile); grandchildren, Caleb, Aiden and Hunter Brooks; brothers, John Reed (Paulette), Mack Reed (Kathy); sister, Pamela Young and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loyal Golden Retriever, Gulliver. Sam was born in Arab, Alabama. He received his bachelor's degree from Auburn University in 1980 and was currently employed as Vice President-Sales and Production at MidSouth Aggregates. He was deeply passionate about his family, friends and Auburn University. He was so very proud of his children. He was a supportive and loving husband, father and father-in-law. He displayed such joy in attending any activity he could that involved his grandchildren, whether it be an athletic event or a program at school or church. He was a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Visitation will be held at Shades Mountain Baptist Church Conference Center on Monday, July 11 at 11 A.M. followed by a Celebration Service at 1 P.M. Danny Estes

Danny Estes was an amazing father. Being his only child, he obviously spoiled me. Daddy passed on his knowledge of basketball and fishing to me, which I now have the privilege of passing on to my kids. I got to spend a short, but awesome twelve years with one of the most honorable man I've ever known. Daddy died in April of 2001. of a massive heart attack. Jimmy Kline

James C. Kline III was in the Mary Lewis Convalescent Center, a nursing home in Birmingham, for two years following an automobile accident in 1987.  He died on June 14, 1989 shortly after being admitted to UAB Hospital.  Prior to his injury he was a computer operator at SCI Corporation in Huntsville.

Keith Poole

Keith Wayne Poole, age 58 of Guntersville died Sunday – February 21, 2016 at his residence. He was born on May 21, 1957 in Marshall County. He was a salesman for Cooks Pest Control. He had lived in the Georgia Mountain Community for 13 years. He attended First Assembly Of God Church. Keith's hobby was playing Rotisserie Fantasy Baseball.

Rickey Rhodes

Rickey Lynn Rhodes, 56 of the Ruth Community, Arab died Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at his residence

Mr. Rhodes was born February 23, 1958 in Marshall County, the son of Barney H. Sr. and Bonnie J. Casey Rhodes. He was a graduate of Arab High School, Class of 1976 and although a lifetime resident of the Ruth Community, he previously lived in Texas for the past 12 years and was a real estate agent there.

He is survived by a step daughter: LaDana Baker; his mother: Bonnie J. Rhodes; a brother: Junior Rhodes; two sisters: Sheila Rhodes and Kathy Click; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; preceded in death by his father: Barney H. Rhodes, Sr.

Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2014 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, Brother Sherman Bailey, officiating. Burial will be in Gilliam Springs Cemetery, Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, directing.

Tommy Luttrell

Tommy was one of the very first people I met, maybe THE first, on my first day at Arab High School.  He was a great ball player, a great teammate, and an all around nice guy.  Looking back he was one of the more under appreciated and valued players on our basketball and baseball team.  Tommy died of leukemia at the age of 24.   Written by Ken Holcomb

Jimmy King

Jimmy was born on October 2, 1956.  After high school he worked as a sheet metal brake operator at C&C Fabricators in Lacey's Spring.  I remember Jimmy as a polite, shy, person who preferred not to draw attention to himself.  He loved life and he was always eager to help family and friends.  He married Susan Walker and they had a daughter named Amanda.  Tragically, Susan died in a house fire and Jimmy was left to raise Amanda on his own.  Years later Amanda married and had three daughters.  The youngest daughter, Ryleigh, was born with a birth defect and, after an extended stay in the hospital, passed away.  I don't think Jimmy ever got over it and the stress and sadness may have contributed to his death. Donald Lee Hendrix age 55, of Arab passed away Sunday Oct. 6, 2013, at Marshall Medical Center North. Mr. Hendrix was born on April 3, 1958, in Los Angeles, California to Reginald and Carolyn Poiset Hendrix. He worked as a Service Engineer for Greenbrier Rail Systems and was married for 36 years to Carla Pool Hendrix. He served in the US Air Force from 1976-1978. Donald was a member of New Brashier’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as Music Director

Keith Collins

Keith Collins and I were good friends throughout elementary and junior high school.  We drifted a little in high school but always talked at every opportunity.  In 2nd grade he gave me the nickname "Noodles" which has stuck until this day.  He was a sweet guy and will always hold a special place in my heart.  He and Barry bring back great memories of fun parties!

After high school Keith served in the military.  He and his brother, Barry worked in Dothan.  Keith died in a car accident there in 1980.  He missed a curve and went over an embankment and passed away instantly.  I was friends with his Mom for years.

I met Michael in the 6th grade when my family moved from Guntersville to Union Grove.  Union Grove School was a very small school then.  There wasn't a popular crowd and a non popular crowd.  We were all equals and good friends.  I remember that Michael was a good student.  

My Mom wanted all of her kids to be in the band so I went to Arab Jr. High in the 8th grade.  I lost contact with most of my friends from the Grove because they didn't come on to Arab until the 10th grade.  After high school graduation we all went our separate ways and Michael joined the Navy.  I remember one Christmas in either 1978 or 1979 Michael came home on leave and stayed with Nickey and Pam, who were married then.  The four of us struck out to Huntsville on a Saturday night when it was extremely cold.  Michael, a very generous person, paid for all our meals.  On the way home Nickey was driving (a car we had borrowed from Pam's Daddy) and the roads were icing over.  Nick ran off the road at dead man's curve on the Union Grove Road.  That was before cell phones and we had to depend on the kindness of strangers.  (Pam should have been driving because she was the only one not drinking.)

After the Navy Michael worked for Mr. Lindsey down in Parches Cove.  It was during this time that Michael became withdrawn and then, unfortunately, reclusive and paranoid. One day he completely disappeared off the radar.  Pam, Nickey, Shannon Parker, and I wondered for decades what happened to him.  We missed him.  He was a good person.

On December 14, 2014 Donna Clemons Collins found out through Facebook that Michael had died.  We were shocked to discover he had been living in Dadeville, Alabama all these years where he worked as a heavy equpment operator.  We were delighted to find out he had lived a happy life and that he had a wife, Cheryl, and a step-daughter, Catlin, who adored him.  Catlin started a Facebook page titled:  RIP Mike Whisenant.  Take a look.  It will warm your heart.

Dianne Thrasher

Melba Dianne Thrasher Martin, 
Aubust 6, 1958 - April 2, 2015 

Dianne was a sales associate for Wal Mart and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.  She attended our 35 year class reunion in November of 2011.  Several classmates commented on how nice she looked.  Dianne had a daughter, Kristina Albers and a son, Adrian Jean Lovvorn.

Lowell Sampson

Lowell was on the planning committee for our 35 year class reunion.  He came to the planning meetings on Saturdays and was very helpful locating phone numbers and addresses for our classmates.  He will be greatly missed at our 40 year reunion.

Lowell worked for Floral Design for over 29 years, until it closed. Then he worked at Arab Kids Kollege, which he owned with his wife, Michell Pesnell. Lowell lived in the Ruth community and attended Bonds Chapel Holiness Church.  At the time of his death in 2014 he had three children and three grandchildren.  

Lowell was an avid Alabama fan.  Roll Tide Lowell!

Zoann was very shy when we were in school, but after you got to know her, you discovered that she had a wonderful personality.  She was funny, happy, and full of life.  Our mothers were both in the nursing field and worked together, therefore, Zoann was like family to me.  Her brother and my brother were best friends.  Unfortunately, I found out about Zoann's passing a year after she died.  I couldn't believe my ears when her brother told me.  Zoanne, I think of you often.  May you rest in peace ~ Written by Annette Solley Monk

Bobby went to Union Grove School until the 10th grade when he went on to Arab High School. When we were growing up he often attended my church home, Brocks Chapel Church of Christ. Bobby loved to play football and he got along well with his family. After high school he became a photographer. He met his wife Pam in Virginia and they had a daughter. One night in 1986 Bobby and Steve Huggins went to P.J.'s Alley in Guntersville. When they got home Bobby was showing off his new gun when it accidentally went off and killed him. What a tragedy as Bobby could have gone on to do great things with his life. He was the only person I have ever led to Christ, and I have blessed assurance that I'll see him again one day. ~ Written by Nick Walker

January 10, 1958 - January 7, 2009

Ronnie was married to Phyllis Mason and had two children, Leslie and Cody. He worked in the floral industry for many years before going to work for Atrion Medical Products in Arab. While in high school Ronnie worked for Shorty Whisenant repairing bikes and mowers. He and his Dad had a lawnmower shop behind his Dad's home. Ronnie was a preacher for over twenty years and served several churches during his ministry. He was actually standing in the pulpit on Sunday morning when he began to feel ill. Ronnie was immediately sent to the ER where he later passed away due to a heart attack. Ronnie is remembered for his love of family and the Lord. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.

Julie Andrews

Julie Andrews 1957 - 2008

We remember Julie as quiet, shy, sweet, and very smart. She was one of the “Grassy” girls – where you found one, you would find the rest. All of us “Grassy” girls stuck together, even in high school. We were all friends from the first grade so our bond spanned many years and many childhood experiences. Kathy remembers going to Julie’s house during her high school years and sharing popcorn and watching TV. Her parents would follow Kathy home to make sure she was safe. That was just the kind of caring people Julie and her family were. We all had a sleepover at Betsy’s house on graduation night to cumulate our years together and bring our childhoods to an end. We then went our separate ways but never forgot each other. Julie we miss you girlfriend, and we will always cherish our memories of you. After graduation Julie attended Snead State for two years and then went on to Jacksonville State University. She received double degrees in math and computer science. Julie graduated with honors, 9th in the class. After graduation from college, she went to work for NASA in Huntsville. There she met and married David Johnson. They had three children, Brian (now 23), Bethany (now 20) and Jamie (now 16). She was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom while the children were small. When Jamie was two years old Julie and David divorced. Julie went to work for BellSouth in Birmingham where she remained until 2005. While there she met and married Russell Scruggs. She went back to school to take advanced courses in computers. She then went to work with Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Alabama as a computer programmer. In 2008 Julie developed pneumonia and was admitted to St. Vincent hospital in Birmingham. I first met Joe in the 9th grade when we were both in Mr. Carver's Civics class.  Mr. Carver was good friends with my grandfather, R. C. Short, and because I tried to give the appearance of being studious, I sat on the front row.  One morning Mr. Carver gave a written assignment to be completed in class.  The room was quiet and everyone was working when a note was passed to me from the back of the room.  It was an off colored note, to put it mildly, and it was signed Joe V. Clayton.  My face turned several shades of red as I heard suppressed laughter from Richard Bass.  When the bell rang I sprinted out of that class as fast as possible, hoping my parents would allow me transfer to Guntersville High School.  I heard a voice calling "Sandy" but I didn't slow down until I was in my next class.  Joe followed me with a mortified look on his face.  He did his best to assure me that he didn't have anything to do with the note and apologized for Richard's crudeness.  We all had at least one bad experience in high school, didn't we?  From that day forward, Joe went out of his way to prove to me that he was indeed a gentleman.  My next significant memory is from 12th grade when the Clayton's barn caught fire and several horses died.  Joe was extremely upset and I remember him telling us in Mr. Warren's class that he listened to "Candle In The Wind" over and over as he grieved.    

I lost touch with Joe V. after high school.  Sadly, Joe died in a car accident on April 15, 1992.  Like Norma Jean, Joe's young life was tragically cut short and the town of Arab mourned the loss of a well known citizen.  Joe loved a good party, and he would have enjoyed attending all of our fun class reunions.

For Joe, I hope they have Chevy sports cars in heaven.

Sharon Jordan

Sharon Marie Jordan Leech
1957 - 1982

Sister Sharon, little sister Sharon, was always a joy to be around. The sound of the piano coming from the kitchen, the beautiful singing voice, ever present smile; the things I will always remember. After graduating from Arab High School , she attended Snead State and was one of the members of the “Freedom Singers”, which evolved into the Snead State College Street Singers. She was a member of Rocky Mount Primitive Baptist Church in Arab and loved Sacred Harp music. The annual Sharon Jordan Leach Memorial Singing is held on the Saturday before the third Sunday in April every year at Rocky Mount Primitive Baptist Church. After graduating from Snead she married Greg Leach of Guntersville. She worked in Huntsville. She died in a car accident June 21, 1982. She was a wonderful sister, a friend, and through her I met my life mate, Janet Wilkinson, whom I married January 23, 1977.  ~ Written by Terry Jordan 
 I can add little to Terry's tribute except that on cold, winter mornings, I would go by and pick up Sharon for school. I was always envious of her “make-up” routine which consisted only of mascara and a little lip gloss - she was so naturally beautiful ! I did, however, take advantage of the occasion to slip quietly downstairs and steal a “bye” kiss from my sweetheart. Patricia Matthews

Patricia "Tricia" Matthews passed away May 24, 2010 due to injuries sustained in a fall at her home. She was hospitalized for several weeks and endured three major surgeries in an heroic attempt to save her life, but the injuries proved too great to overcome. Fortunately, she regained intermittent consciousness several times after her surgeries and we were able to briefly communicate with her, for which we are grateful. Tricia lived her life quietly and preferred anonymity over publicity. Known for her quick wit, vivid sense of humor, and love for exotic and unusual foods, Tricia clearly danced to the beat of her own drum. She was opinionated and outspoken on issues of the day, but extended great warmth and heartfelt compassion to family, friends, and her pets. Tricia's expressed desire was to be cremated and laid to rest in a private family ceremony. It is with a deep sense of sadness and loss that we said goodbye to Tricia at such a young age. We will miss her very much and know she will rest in peace with the knowledge that we and others loved her for who she was and always will be in our hearts.
